A social service agency in the Northern Marianas' says a significant number of families seeking help for abuse are doing so because of the impact of methamphetamine on their lives.

About 30 percent of families seeking shelter against abuse are fleeing violence that relates directly to the drug.
Karidat Social Services said of the 65 families it has helped at the Guma Esperansa, or House of Hope, facility this year, a third of the cases can be blamed on the drug addiction of their tormentors.
Guma Esperansa is a shelter for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.
Karidat also said half the dozens of children they are seeing are directly affected by the drug problem.
