The death of a person whose body was found in the Avon River in Christchurch is not believed to be suspicious.

Emergency services were called shortly after 10.30am to the scene in Hagley Park on Riccarton Avenue on Friday.

Police staff including forensic teams have been examining the scene and taking photos with officers bringing stretchers, gumboots and waders into the cordoned off area.

An area of Hagley Park next to Riccarton Ave was cordoned off and multiple police cars and officers were at the scene after a body was found in the nearby Avon River on Friday 8 December.

Cordons were expected to be lifted in the coming hours.
