Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee says if violent criminals are "locked up in prison" they will not be in communities "creating harm and creating more victims", in a bid to strengthen the 'three-strikes' law.

The government wants the controversial law to capture more offenders, following select committee submissions.

Also, Labour has asked the Auditor-General to investigate a government decision to slash tax on heated tobacco products, claiming there are signs of "industry influence".
