A new $50 million gondola project has been announced in Queenstown, linking the airport suburb of Frankton with the Remarkables ski field.
Frankton is being developed as a possible Queenstown Convention Centre site and the new gondola plan could strengthen that case.
The 10km gondola will need resource consent and will then take 18 months to build. The project could be completed by the end of 2018.
Developer the Porter Group described it as a project of national significance, which it said would help New Zealand stay competitive in the international tourism market.
The Remarkables ski field is currently accessed by a steep, unsealed road.
