One of the challenges for each competitor of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition is to perform a new work by a New Zealand composer which was especially commissioned for the competition. Since the first competition in 2001 there have been eight works written so far.
Gillian Whitehead was the first composer to be commissioned. Her 2001 piece is called 'Bright Silence'.
Here she is, discussing her piece with violinist Amber Read.
