Te Iti Kahurangi affiliate to Waikato, Raukawa, Maniapoto and Hauraki hapū – they base themselves at Rukumoana marae near Morrinsville.

They’ve successfully represented Tainui waka over the years at Te Matatini and consistently appear in the top nine teams.

The name of the group is taken from the saying, “Whāia te iti kahurangi” – “Pursue excellence”. They encourage this in their group members, which has resulted in some of its performers breaking away to form their own kapa. Tūwhitia kia Angitu is one such breakaway.

In this programme, Shannon talks to the two leaders of the kapa, Te Waipounamu Teinakore and Kingi Kiriona.
