Ad Wammes is a Dutch composer who in the 1980s wrote music for Sesame Street as well as many other television series.

More recently he has concentrated on writing concert music. Peaceful Waves was commissioned by the coastal Roman Catholic Diocese of Ningbo in China to celebrate a new organ in its cathedral. 'Ningbo' translates as 'peaceful waves'.
It is subtitled 'a barcarolle' (gondolier's song) suggesting the gently rocking rhythms of a ride on a Venetian canal.
