Auckland Jazz Orchestra presents a heartfelt tribute to the late New Zealand jazz pianist and composer Phil Broadhurst (1949–2020).
Broadhurst sadly passed away in 2020. He was major force in the jazz scene of Aotearoa. He championed original music, wrote a lot himself, and fostered many musicians in the country. He was the first jazz musician awarded an MNZM in 2001 for services to music.
Throughout his career he was a pianist, composer, bandleader, broadcaster and educator. For many years he produced the Jazz programme The Art of Jazz on RNZ Concert.

The Auckland Jazz Orchestra put together a programme of ten new arrangements of Broadhurst’s original compositions for 17-piece contemporary jazz big band. In 2024 they performed the music at the Auckland Arts Festival in a concert called Inverted.
The arrangements were made by the AJO musical director, Tim Atkinson, band leader Mike Booth, and alto sax player Andrew Hall.
Listen here to the concert, which took place in the Concert Chamber of the Auckland Town Hall.
Recorded in the Auckland Town Hall Concert Chamber, 17 March 2024.
Produced, recorded and mixed for RNZ by Adrian Hollay.
