Kirgan Baez, Julian: Reflection

From Music Alive, 3:40 pm on 16 December 2025

Composed in 2022, Reflection is an introspective journey which begins in a contemplative state next to the Waimapihi stream deep in the heart of Aro Valley in Wellington. The piece was commissioned and premiered by Orchestra Wellington as part of their Composer Mentorship initiative, in which Julian was mentored by John Psathas during 2021-22.

Reflection is Julian’s second orchestral work and serves as a journey of self-expression, showcasing a fluid sense of motion that weaves in and out of daydreams, deep personal thoughts, and the natural environment. Julian lets his late-romantic influences show in this work while simultaneously demonstrating and developing his unique compositional voice.
