Ashley Jackson speaks to RNZ Concert about her new album "Take me to the Water" in which the African American harpist performs everything from spirituals to jazz to Debussy, linked by the molecule which runs through all humanity like no other.
Speaking from her home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Jackson told Concert host Bryan Crump the album is recognition not only of the spiritual importance water plays in African American life, but of how it unifies all cultures.
Water, she told Crump, can be both a barrier and something that connects us.
At a time of growing disharmony in the United States, Jackson chose connection.
