He made his reputation as an interpreter of J S Bach, but he's no slouch with Mozart or Beethoven.
Masaaki Suzuki, founder of the Bach Collegium Japan, is conducting the NZSO in a concert of music by all three composers in a North Island tour this weekend.
It's his third visit to Aotearoa - having brought Bach Collegium Japan here in 2014, and the Julliard415 ensemble in 2017, but his first conducting New Zealand's national orchestra.
RNZ Concert's Clarissa Dunn spoke with Suzuki ahead of his first concert at the Michael Fowler Centre, talking about everything from music to language, and the bible.
RNZ Concert is broadcasting the Wellington performance live from the Michael Fowler Centre, but if you miss it, Suzuki and the NZSO are also taking the show to Auckland on 10 May, and Hamilton for a matinee concert on Sunday 11 May.
