Moment of Calm: White water - white noise

As is sometimes the case, this week's "Sonic" Moment of Calm came out of Bryan Crump's search for something else.

Initially Crump had gone looking to record a large ship gliding by in Wellington's harbour - but that ship had sailed.

Sam Wilson captured this image of the Southern Lights at Red Rocks on Wellington's south coast on 11 October 2024.

Crump decided to chase it to Wellington's South Coast. He also knew there was the possibility of spotting the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) so he hopped on his bike and attempted to tick two boxes with one ride.

Alas, the sea was quite rough, too rough to hear any ships passing by. And the Southern Lights?

Well, the best Crump could capture were some misty ship lights on the horizon.

But not all was lost, he also recorded the sound of the big surf.

It's natural white noise at its whitest, and a reminder, when things don't go to plan, that tapping into something far bigger than yourself can give life's disappointments a better perspective.
