Charlotte Talbot's first memories of classical music are of her mother playing the piano (probably impromptus by Schubert) to put her to sleep.
Her mother's approach was so successful, Talbot never did find out how those pieces ended.
But Talbot does remember watching her mother taking pre-school music and movement classes when she was a child.
These days she's doing the same with pre-school children in Canterbury, with regular classes in Temuka and Timaru.
Talbot spoke with RNZ Concert about her use of music (especially classical music) to spark kids' imagination and get them moving - Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" and Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" are a couple of ever-effective numbers.
She also stressed the importance of getting the parents moving at her sessions. After all, they are a child's most important role models.
