Early this month New Zealand foreign affairs minister Winston Peters along with a broad political delegation visited Solomon Islands, Nauru, and Niue.

Nauru is keen to start deep sea mining in international waters.

However, New Zealand under the last government joined a growing list of nations calling for a moratorium or temporary pause on deep sea mining in the high seas.

RNZ Pacific's Caleb Fotheringham caught up with New Zealand's deputy prime minister at the end of the trip and asked if New Zealand's position had changed.

The International Seabed Authority is currently meeting in Kingston, Jamaica to continue discussing deep sea mining regulations.
