1:15 Illinois sings for NZ

For one week in the run up to Christmas University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign operates a 24/7 carol singing hotline

Dial-A-Carol. You can call up, request a rendition of your favourite Xmas song, and have it preformed live by a student

It's a tradition that stretches all the way back to 1960.

Jesse rolls the dice and calls the hotline. What or who will answer?

3:25 Weekend Stuff: gardening with Kate Hillier

Gardening consultant Kate Hillier has some ideas about getting everything in ship shape before Christmas and the judging eyes of visiting relatives.

The garden of listener Helen's father who died a couple of years ago, just before his 89th birthday. It was a montser patch - the equivalent of a three bedroom house, Helen writes, and after his death became a sea of weeds. She has since resurrected the garden into a "riot of colour", and her mum is able to take flowers to enjoy inside.

3:35 Critter of the Week: Sapphire spider fly

This week’s critter deserves the nickname ‘jewel of death’. The sapphire spider fly, Apsona muscaria, is endemic to Aotearoa and is an endoparasite of native spider species like the NZ tunnelweb, Porrhothele antipodiana.

Sapphire spider fly larva wriggles its way into a spider’s abdomen to set itself up inside its lungs to feed and grow. When the larva is ready to turn into an adult fly, it bursts out and feeds on the dead arachnid before transforming into a stunning sapphire blue fly.
