The pros and cons of workplace drug testing

The Prime Minister Bill English has said the country's skill shortage is due to many young workers not being able to pass a drug test. He said companies tell him two or three times a week they are struggling to hire locals because they can't pass the drugs tests required under workplace safety rules.

We've spoken to a few employers in the building and plumbing industries who have  told us that drug use is a real issue, but drug testing can create a climate of distrust as well, and can create more problems than it solves.
