From Afternoons, 2:24 pm on 11 May 2011

Wellington Zoo staff are fighting to make sure the number of rare Chatham Island taiko doesn't go from 140 to 139. A sick taiko chick has been brought to the zoo for treatment. Taikos are one of the world's rarest birds. This may be the first time the magenta petrel, on the edge of extinction, has been brought to the mainland. DOC staff on the Chatham Islands decided they had to get help for the rare bird after it was found bedraggled and damp with no waterproofing.
