Workplace Relations Minister on vaccine mandate expansion

From Checkpoint, 5:13 pm on 26 October 2021

The government has announced the Covid vaccine will be compulsory for all workers at businesses where customers need to show a vaccine certificate.

That includes cafes, restaurants, gyms and hairdressers.

The Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Wood talks to Nita Blake-Persen.

Wood told Checkpoint as taxis and rideshare services are not covered by Covid vaccine certificates so currently a vaccination mandate does not apply to drivers.

“Ministers are going to go and do some further work to consider whether there should be some further areas who are added to these requirements.

“We've been working closely with our social partners, Business New Zealand, other business sector groups and the CTU. And we'll be having ongoing conversations with them to determine whether there are other areas where it is appropriate.”

He said the government has no current plans to mandate vaccination for all state sector employees, but ministers are working to see if there are other areas where it is appropriate.
