Storms are causing chaos in parts of the motu, grounding flights, forcing businesses to shut and causing evacuations. A local state of emergency has been declared in Christchurch. A local state of emergency remains in place in the Selwyn District in Canterbury. Wellington is under a red wind warning, with the possibility of threat to life from falling trees and other debris.
