Deary Deer - It's a Calf

From Country Life, 9:28 pm on 7 December 2018

Decades ago Bill Robinson from Raroa Deer was told red deer don't have fawns they have calves - so he's sticking to it. Bill's been the manager at Raroa deer for more than 20 years and the first of November means one thing; it's calving time. Hinds plant their calves in the grass and the babies barely move, unless their mothers prompt them, until they are a week or more old. At first Bill, who was used to doing a lambing beat, would go into the paddock to check on the newborns.  He soon stopped for fear of running one over.
