Two bananas duct taped to the wall find themselves unexpectedly in the spotlight. In a clown, fruit mash-up of physical theatre, How To Art is hitting the walls of Basement Theatre in Auckland.

Created by theatre makers Katie Burson and Georgie Llewellyn, it’s a tongue-and-cheek reference to Maurizio Cattelan’s 2019 Comedian artwork in which a real banana was duct taped to a wall and sold as art. A conceptual piece, two editions of the work sold for $201,000 each bringing to the forefront questions about what constitutes art, the value of art and the place of the audience.

Speaking to Culture 101’s Perlina Lau, these are the same questions Burson and Llewellyn have been grappling with: how to survive and continue making art while navigating the challenges facing the creative industries.

How To Art is at the Basement Theatre from 12-16 November and it’s ‘pay what you choose’.
