History lessons from 1769 for our future
Three years ago Aoteaora marked 250 years since the first encounter between Maori and Captain James Cook and his crew on board HMS Endeavour. Tuia 250 commemorated those first encounters and now a new book is being released that captures the views of tangata whenua in 2019. Me Anga Whakamua, Facing the Future, explores the impact of Maori-European contact in 1769 and afterwards, through the eyes of several generations of Maori. Janet Hetaraka edited the book and she says Tuia 250 was an opportunity to 'unwrap our history, pick out some bits that have gone bad and make something from our history from what we have.'
