Lili Marleen is more than just a song. It spread around the world and gave hope to soldiers and their loved-ones during World War II.
It is a German love song originally written as a poem in 1915 by German novelist, poet and playwright Hans Leip. The poem was published under the title 'Das Lied eines jungen Soldaten auf der Wacht' (German for 'The Song of a Young Soldier on Watch') in 1937, and was first recorded by Lale Andersen in 1939 under the title 'Das Mädchen unter der Laterne' ('The Girl under the Lantern').
It became popular during World War II with soldiers of both sides and there are German, English and American versions with differing lyrics. Mack David is credited with the American version (published in 1943 as 'Lili Marlene') that was made famous by Marlene Dietrich.
