Parliament is debating legislation setting up a new child welfare ministry, and the Race Relations Commissioner says that change needs to be based on a sound understanding of the past. Dame Susan Devoy has warned the Government risks repeating the mistakes of the past if it doesn't hold an independent inquiry into abuse in state welfare institutions.
