Danger of busy Wellington railways revealed

From Morning Report, 7:51 am on 5 February 2018

An official report says an expected increase in commuter rail traffic in Wellington will add to what is already a high risk of trains colliding. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission report says Wellington Railway Station's track layout is congested with minimal back-up safety systems if a driver fails to stop at a red light. It says KiwiRail needs to do more to reduce the chances of a big accident. Captain Tim Burfoot is the commission's chief accidents investigator, and discusses the issue with Guyon Espiner. He says there needs to be a long-term strategy to fix congestion at Wellington train station.
