Fire and Emergency says more than half of the marae they've visited don't have smoke alarms and very few have sprinklers, putting the marae and taonga inside it - in some cases worth millions - at risk.
The investigation into Sunday morning's devastating blaze at Wellington's Tapu Te Ranga marae includes looking at whether its fire alarm system was effective.
