A special Education Ministry squad investigating potentially dodgy early childhood providers has been on hold since the end of October.
The Provider Assessment Group made surprise visits to high-risk early learning services over the course of three years - closing down 17.
The ministry says it will restart the group once it has recruited a manager to lead it.
