Investigations opened into three weekend incidents

From Morning Report, 8:52 am on 30 January 2023

Investigations begin today into yesterday's derailment of a freight train near Te Puke after a section of track was lost to flood waters.

It's one of three investigations launched over a hectic weekend by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission.

As well as the derailment, they include what caused a power outage on the interislander, Kaitaki on Saturday night, as well as an inquiry into the ropey landing of an Air New Zealand flight into Auckland Airport on Friday night during wild weather.

TAIC says the pilot briefly lost control, crossing the runway centre and damaging landing lights, as well as the plane's undercarriage.

TAIC chief investigator of accidents Naveen Kozhuppakalam spoke to Corin Dann.
