Dust to Dusky live at the Spiegeltent

From RNZ Music, 4:00 pm on 11 June 2016

Celebrating Dusty Springfield at the Auckland Arts Festival 2016

"Pop-soul vocalist Dusty Springfield performed everything from adult pop, Memphis R&B and Motown-style soul, traditional folk and country to contemporary dance music over her long career. Born Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien in London in 1939, Dusty had become Britain’s most popular female vocalist by 1964. She went on to enjoy hits in four successive decades.

Smitten by the soulful sounds coming out of Detroit, her approach had little to do with guitar-driven rock and roll. She gravitated toward Motown’s orchestrated pop-soul, filtered through the cool, poised vocal approach that reflected her British background. Dusty was meticulous about her arrangements and often not credited as Musical Director despite her care for detail. In a patriarchal and highly sexist industry, she stood firm and fast." - Adapted from Auckland Arts Festival programme (pdf).

Premiering at the 2016 Auckland Arts Festival, Dust to Dusky sees Anna Coddington, Bella Kalolo, Tami Neilson and Colleen Davis (as Dusty), take to the Spiegeltent stage to celebrate and channel Dusty Springfield, re-imagining her hits and remembering the smoky-voiced pop-soul vocalist who passed away almost two decades ago.
