Newtown Festival 2014

From RNZ Music, 3:05 pm on 8 March 2014

On March 2nd, around 80,000 people gathered in the small Wellington suburb of Newtown for the 18th annual Street Festival. The festival was born out of a community consultation process by Red Design architects, who threw a party after redesigning curbs, trees, seating and street flow in the suburb back in 1996. It's been a growing annual event ever since, showcasing the sights smells and sounds the suburb, and greater community has to offer, including 11 stages of live music, sound systems, and a heaving Batucada parade all co-ordinated by James Coyle of The Nudge. Emma Smith joined the throngs in Newtown last Sunday.
