Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme
Dr Ian Singleton, director of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) in Sumatra talked on Nights about the global support to conserve orangutans in their natural habitat.

Male orangutan Leuser – who was blinded, after being shot 62 times! He was released into Bukit Tigapuluh National Park successfully, but came down onto the ground so was around village area. Shot by villagers, including in the eyes. Shot with air-rifle pellets.
Female orangutan Dek Nong, who will be one of the first orangutan residents at the new Earth 4 Orangutans Haven, which the Auckland talk is raising funds for. She has creeping paralysis and arthritis, so is not able to be released to the wild.
