Song Crush - Laura Marling, Yves Tumor, Purity Ring

From Song Crush, 3:30 pm on 18 April 2020

The Song Crush team have everything from acoustic folk to gothic pop for your lockdown listening this week.

Somni - Home

Operating in the space between singer-songwriter and beat-maker, Leo Shulman’s work as Somni goes out of its way to make everything as small as possible. Lyrics are whispered, percussion is lightly tapped; his fingers barely brush the acoustic guitar strings. It’s music that makes an asset of home recording, leaning into the headroom hiss and intimacy that comes with the territory. TS

Laura Marling - Only The Strong

Yves Tumor – Kerosene!

Purity Ring - peacefall

This electronic duo from Canada steer very close to the aesthetic of commercial pop, but listen past the sheen and there’s plenty to enjoy - adventurous production textures abound from Corin Roddick, and the songwriting tends toward the gothic, pairing cinematic chord progressions with vocalist Megan James’ subversively sweet delivery. Whim - Familiar

Levi Patel – As She Passes (nocturne)
