Ka tika a muri, ka tika a mua - healing the past, building a future - this has long been a guiding kaupapa for claimants and the Crown in the treaty settlement process. In 2023 the Crown signed deeds of settlement with Whakatohea, Central Whanganui and might be close to final ratification with Te Whanau a Apanui in the eastern Bay of Plenty. As the debate continues around the government's policies towards the treaty, the settlement of historical claims and the emergence of new ones continues.
