The Government has called for expressions of interest from developers to build 750 medium-density homes in the centre of Christchurch.
It's purchasing the biggest share of land in the central business district to help drive its redevelopment after the earthquakes left most of the existing buildings damaged beyond repair.
The Government wants to bring an extra 20,000 residents into the city.
Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says the successful developer will build the homes while the government will pay for a neighbouring Margaret Mahy Family Playground and a central park between the houses.
Mr Brownlee says the developer will be chosen by the middle of the year and the new homes built over the next five to 10 years.
