Mental health specialists say a nation-wide discussion on sexual consent is needed, in the wake of a police investigation not resulting in charges for teenagers involved in a sex-ring.
After a year-long investigation, the police decided not to lay charges against a group of young men in Auckland who boasted online of having sex with intoxicated young girls.
Mental Health Foundation chief executive Judi Clement said discussions and education about consent was needed for society to have the same understanding of its meaning.
She said an examination of the justice system was also needed because the current process often re-victimises sexual abuse victims.
