The brunt of the bad weather has passed and the hard-hit West Coast is set to improve today.
The major storm which caused flooding and damage yesterday has weakened overnight.
Meteorologist Sarah Haddon said the storm is moving to the South East of the country.
"We do have a front that is still lingering over the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne area at the moment but we do expect that to move off to the east by this afternoon.
"An area of low-pressure off the coast of Westland which will continue to bring rain, but it will move east as well," she said.
Ms Haddon said this weekend Canterbury can expect strong and cold southerlies.
"There will be scattered showers but it will be light nothing like the heavy rain that we've seen.
"The heaviest rain and strong winds have all moved away," Ms Haddon said.
