Queenstown's new $22 million Kawarau Falls Bridge has opened to both lanes of traffic this afternoon.
The new bridge - which connects Queenstown to Southland and Fiordland - replaces the single-lane bridge built in 1926.
It has been a long time coming for Queenstown's residents, as they have tackled increasing tourist numbers and heavy congestion in the area.
Transport Agency spokesperson Jim Harland said all motorists would benefit from a marked reduction in congestion, especially during peak travel times.
Mr Harland said the bridge was built to withstand a one in 2500-year earthquake.
