One person has died and eight people are injured after a three vehicle crash on State Highway 1 at Pukenui in the Far North.

The incident took place near Whalers Rd early this afternoon.
Police said early information suggested one person was in a critical condition, two were in a serious condition, and five people had sustained moderate to minor injuries.
Waka Kotahi NZTA tweeted that SH1 north of Houhora Heads Rd was reopened around 3.30pm after earlier being closed as a result of the crash.
