Much of the North Island can expect thunderstorms on Thursday between 1pm and 7pm, with some becoming severe, MetService says.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taupō, Hawke's Bay, Taihape, Wanganui, Manawatū, Tararua and Wairarapa.

Localised downpours with intensities of 25 to 40 mm per hour may be seen from Thursday afternoon to evening, MetService said.
The heavy rainfall could cause surface flooding and slips, it said.
