Strong wind warnings are in place for parts of the South Island until midnight.
For Tararua, coastal Marlborough, Banks Peninsula, the Canterbury Plains, north Otago, Dunedin and Clutha MetService strong wind warnings are in place until at least midnight.
There is also a strong wind watch for Hawke's Bay south of Hastings until midnight.
Thousands of households through Canterbury, Otago and further north in Tararua are without power and some in the Christchurch area could be without power overnight.
Orion's spokesperson Paul Deavoll says some areas it may be too risky for crew to operate.
"The later we get into the evening, the becomes a possibility that people could be without power overnight.
"Now that we're after 9pm at night, although we'll certainly be investigating how we can restore power, it may be that we're not putting crews out tonight."
Meanwhile snowfall warnings were in place for SH 73's Porter Pass until 11pm and SH 7's Lewis Pass until midnight with up to 2cm of snow near both summits.
A warning will also be in place for the Desert Road from 4am tomorrow with up to 2cm of snow above 800 metres.
Snowfall warnings have lifted for the Lindis Pass, Crown Range and Milford roads.
