MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Waikato, Matamata Piako, Waipā and Otorohanga.
Meanwhile a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in force for Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupō and Taihape.

These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the south-southeast, and are expected to lie near TAUPŌ, WAIRAKEI and LAKE TAUPŌ at 04:45 pm and near TAUPŌ and LAKE TAUPŌ at 05:15 pm.@CivilDefenceWKT pic.twitter.com/6pixW5Oo1F
MetService says the thunderstorm is moving south and is expected to bring heavy rain and frequent lightning.
The severe thunderstorm warning is in place until 6.45pm.
