Flooding and snow in the South Island has closed roads and stranded motorists this weekend.

A bus carrying 26 passengers slid off the road on its way to Mt Cook Village on Saturday afternoon.

There were no injuries but the bus could not be towed and alternative transport was arranged for the passengers.

Police said the bus was driven onto a closed road in snowy conditions.

It said the case has been referred to WorkSafe's Commercial Vehicle Safety Team.

And in Marlborough last night, two people had to be rescued after driving into flood waters near Spring Creek just after 9pm.

This morning State Highway 7 - inland of Greymouth - and State Highway 6 in the Lower Buller Gorge, have both been closed because of flooding.

While slips has closed State Highway 6 between Kohatu to Murchison.

Most snow restrictions have now been lifted.
