Thieves posing as tow truck operators have been stealing vehicles in Auckland.

Police were warning people to be on the lookout for dodgy tow trucks after "several" incidents in the past few months.

Counties Manukau Sergeant Suzannah Kimber said the thieves even wore high-visibility clothing to look legitmate.

"Recently these offenders towed a member of the public's vehicle in plain sight. Members of the public drove past this tow truck while they were loading it up as it just looked normal."

After pretending to legitimately tow a vehicle, they dispose of them, Kimber said.

Real tow trucks would have external sign writing and be able to produce a logbook when asked, she said.

"If you see a tow truck without any distinguishing features towing cars, please call police immediately."
