There were heavy rain and strong wind warnings up and down the country overnight.
An orange wind warning expires at 8am for Wellington and Wairarapa and a heavy rain warning for Tararua Range expires at 9am.
MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane told Morning Report it could still be a wet day once warnings are lifted.
The Tararua Ranges saw close to 140-150mm of rain in 24 hours.
The strongest of the winds were felt in Canterbury, with winds well above 100km per hour.
On Sunday many flights in the capital were diverted or cancelled.
"This morning things have started to ease which will be very good news for those fighting fires however as the day goes on we're expecting those westerlies to pick up once again. Not quite as strong as we've seen over the last day but still a little it of a breezy day out there today."
Northern parts of the country would get rain as the weather system tracks north though this wouldn't be as heavy as other areas have seen, she said.
People could expect a warm end to the week.
