A bushfire that broke on Christchurch's Port Hills overnight has now been put out.

The scrub fire at Taylors Mistake was reported shortly after midnight, and spanned about 50 metres when fire crews arrived.

It later doubled in size, and a helicopter was working to reach the hard to access site.

Fire and Emergency said the land in question belonged to the Department of Conservation.

However, ground crews have done a walk-through of the area and the walking tracks and beach are now open as usual.

It follows a week of other wildfires in the region which have burnt through hundreds of hectares.

Firefighters will be back on-site at another blaze near State Highway 1 in Burnham on Sunday morning, extinuishing hotspots.
