Firefighters have extinguished a large blaze at a scrap metal yard in Takanini, South Auckland.
Fire and Emergency said they were called to the fire just before 10.30am and the shift commander said they are now dampening down hotspots.
The fire was about 25 square metres at its largest.
Auckland resident Iain Hudson drove past the fire before it was extinguished and said it was right next to the southern motorway.
"We noticed quite large amounts of black smoke even heading through Manukau...really thick black smoke going across the motorway and quite a few people slowing down to have a look."
He said it appeared a pile of metal rubbish was on fire.
