Safeswim is advising people not to swim at two Tauranga beaches because of sharks.
Dangerous conditions warnings for Omanu Beach and Papamoa Beach have appeared on the website.
It is unclear what kind, or how many sharks have been seen.
On Friday a near one metre-long suspected bronze whaler shark was seen by lifeguards at Omanu Beach.
At the time Surf Lifesaving New Zealand Eastern region manager Chaz Gibbons-Campbell said this was not unusual.
Sharks enjoyed shallow, warmer water, he said, so it was not unusual to see them so close to shore.
"That's their home at the end of the day, that's where they are, and we just need to give them some space when we do see them.
"Chances are if you've spotted them, they're not usually hunting you ... they don't usually go for us as the food type, they're usually looking for other types of food."
