A gas main has burst on Birkenhead Avenue on Auckland's North Shore on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the gas leak at 3.15pm.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said crews assisted police to evacuate the surrounding properties.

Auckland Transport said a section of the road between Pupuke Road and Onewa Road was also closed, and motorists were asked to avoid the area.

It said all traffic had been affected, including buses, and diversions had been put in place.

Fire and Emergency confirmed the leak was fixed at about 4.15pm.

Vector said crews went to the site after a third party had struck an underground gas pipe, causing a leak.

"The leak was isolated and the area made safe shortly after, with Fire and Emergency declaring the road open at 4.30. With the area safe and the leak stopped, we completed permanent repairs and have now left the site," a Vector spokesperson said.
