Police are discouraging people from crane climbing after a social media video appears to show a young person at the top of an under-construction Auckland skyscraper.

A social media user who said they were 16 years old filmed themselves on the boom of a crane 220 metres above ground.

The incident appeared to take place at Seascape Tower, a luxury residential building which had been in-development since 2017.

However, work on the building stopped in August last year due to a feud between builder, China Construction and developer, Shundi.

Police said they were not immediately aware of when the incident occurred.

But they said multiple people had faced enforcement action in recent years for unlawfully entering buildings or building sites in Auckland CBD.

They warned people against participating in the dangerous activity.

"It's really important our young people think about taking part in this sort of action.

"It puts them at risk of serious or fatal consequences."
