Health NZ has confirmed the burst pipe at Auckland Hospital has been successfully repaired overnight, with hot and cold water now available.

"While the issue was being resolved, patients continued to receive high-quality clinical care and we thank staff for managing through this disruption," said Te Whatu Ora Te Toka Tumai Group director of operations Mike Shepherd.

An email from Shepherd to Auckland Hospital staff, seen by RNZ, said there may be some residual issues like discoloured water, though it was still safe to drink.

Extra rounds of cleaning and waste removal would happen on Thursday morning and plumbers were doing "ward walks" through the day, he said.

Water was cut off in Auckland hospital's main building overnight as contractors repaired the burst pipe.

The water was shut off in building 32 from 6pm on Wednesday while the leak in ward 38 was fixed.

The building houses operating theatres and maternity delivery suites.

Temporary portable sinks were available in some operating theatres and bottled water and hot water in urns had to be delivered.

The toilets were still working but patients who could not use them were being given disposable bed pans and bottles.

It's unclear when it was turned back on - but the executive director at Association of Salaried Medical Specialists Sarah Dalton said it was a relief.

She said the pipe burst some time Tuesday night and was a matter of significant public interest and concern.
